Privacy Policy

Dot Threads ("we", "our", or "the Extension") is a browser extension designed with a Local-First architecture. We prioritize your privacy by ensuring that your personal browsing history and knowledge graph data remain on your device.

1. Data Collection & Storage

Local Storage

All data generated by Dot Threads—including saved links, page titles, node connections, and "thread" structures—is stored locally on your device using the browser's chrome.storage API.

  • No Cloud Database: We do not possess, maintain, or have access to a remote database of your content.
  • No Tracking: We do not track your browsing history outside of the specific pages you explicitly choose to save to your graph.
  • No Analytics: We do not use third-party analytics cookies to track your usage of the extension.

2. Permissions Usage

The Extension requires specific permissions to function. Here is how we use them:

  • activeTab & contextMenus: These permissions are used strictly to capture the Title and URL of the webpage you are currently viewing only when you trigger the "Save" action via the right-click menu or extension popup.
  • storage: Used solely to save your graph data to your local hard drive.
  • tabs: Used to display a list of your currently open tabs within the "Connections" interface, allowing you to link active research pages together. This data is read in real-time and is not permanently stored unless you explicitly save a link.
  • scripting: Used to inject the "Save" modal overlay into the current page when you trigger the extension.

3. External Services

The Extension operates primarily client-side. It does not communicate with any backend servers owned by the developer for data storage.

  • Link Previews: The associated dashboard may use the Microlink API to fetch preview screenshots of your saved links. This request sends the URL to Microlink to generate an image. No personal user data is stored by this service.

4. Data Ownership & Export

You retain full ownership of your data.

  • Export: You can export your entire knowledge graph as a JSON file at any time from the application settings.
  • Deletion: If you uninstall the Extension, your local data will be removed by the browser. You can also manually clear data via the extension settings.
